ABOUT THE ARTIST

Born in 1961, in West Bengal, Chandra graduated from the Indian School of Art and Cartoonist (1986) and graduated in Fine Arts from Kala Bhavan, Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan. (1989).

"I watched in amazement the rays of the autumn sun on the green rice fields, the clouds gathering on the horizon, the harvesting of rice fields, the fishermen at work, the boat-making, the potters making clay figures."

Chandra Bhattacharjee's canvases are languid and far removed from the urban world. Dark men and women exist in an ethereal realm untouched by the madness of everyday city life, carrying out their daily tasks. Bhattacharjee's compositions are influenced by the rural and tribal associations with which he had the opportunity to work; particularly the 'Santhal' tribe of Calcutta. The quality of the texture of his paintings is strongly reminiscent of the traditional mud walls of these villages, stained with cow dung.

The colors of Bhattacharjee's paintings are both subdued and vibrant. Warm pinks, full-bodied blues, interspersed with areas of white, soothe the senses. He uses the technique of scratching (the method most used in pencil drawings), in black, on color; This adds depth to the colors of it. Bhattacharjee's paintings tell a story, but it is a story with no beginning and no end and flows seamlessly from the artist to the surface of the canvas. The world of Bhattacharjee's creation has no borders; where humans, animals and surreal creatures coexist in harmony.

Bhattacharjee, although influenced by rural and tribal themes, has a strong academic foundation. He has studied at the Indian College of Art and Draftsmanship, Calcutta. He received a gold medal from Rabindra Bharati University, Calcutta, in 1986. He has held various group and solo exhibitions of his works in Delhi, Mumbai and Calcutta.

He lives and works in Kolkata.
