ARTIST STATEMENT

"The remnants of the traditional lifestyle of my youth stir up my memories and transport me back to this bygone era."

Suhas Bahulkar's paintings are the result of her childhood memories; nostalgia for the culture on the run from his formative years. He was largely inspired by the traditional way of life of Maharashtra: the style of dress, in particular, the "Marwari" (a nine-meter sari) and the old "wadis" (the traditional home of this state), with their faded and broken murals. walls whose representations find a place in his work.

The imagery in Bahulkar's paintings is that of an overlay of family portraits in sepia tones, against a backdrop of traditional Maharashtrian architecture. The prevalence of the use of gold leaf in his works is a symbol of the wealth of the time he describes. He prefers not to restrict himself to anyone, specific medium. "I decide the subject and choose a medium accordingly." He is very particular about the technical aspects of his paintings. For him, the medium varies with the look, texture, or any other particular quality he ultimately wants the painting to have. He has worked with acrylic, oil, and watercolors, and has also experimented with paper, canvas, and wood. The worn and worn look of his paintings extends to his frames as well, to convey an overall effect of age.

Born in 1954 in Pune, Bahulkar obtained a diploma in Painting from the Sir JJ School of Art, Mumbai, in 1975. He has exhibited his works in India and internationally, the most recent being in Hong Kong, in 1999. He lives and works in Mumbai.
