ABOUT THE ARTIST

Born in Dhaka in 1936, the artist started his career at the Indian Art College in Kolkata. Then Nandalal Basu and Ramkinkar Base students in Santiniketan. From there to Paris on a scholarship from the French government. He was successful in graphic design. He is the headteacher of graphics at Ecole Normal. But abroad, leaving all graphics behind, Suhas Roy returned to his old school. Sadh in Santiniketan. He spent the rest of his life there as a painting teacher. Leaving the graphics, he turned to acrylic, the world of canvas paints. His 'Radha' is captured in that paintbrush. This Radha is not Krishna's lover, not the heroine of the verses. Just like any girl we know. Sometimes purple flowers around her aquatic nude body, sometimes vermilion on her head, sometimes she is naked. Where did he get this unknown Radha? ‘The darkness and cruelty of humanity have made me look unfamiliar,’ he would say.
