GOPAL SANYAL

Born in 1933 in Orissa, India. Sanyal completed his Diploma in Fine Arts from the Government College of Art and Craft, Kolkata in 1956-57.

As a benevolent artist not only in West Bengal but also in India. Sanyal devoted his life to sketching human forms depicting his subject's affection for nature and other living beings. Sanyal preferred depicting humanity more than spirituality through his works. Most of his body of works are reflections of dying humans struggling with strength and vigor against the forces of an adverse social system. Sanyal produced concords with pigments but his compositions are by no means appealing. He distorts forms to express his feeling through them. He sees everything around him, not in its usual shape. The naive forms in folk art with sophistication like that of Paul Cezanne make his painting not only a coalition of the East and the West but also a combination of the past and the present.

Sanyal has been a part of many respected group shows with artists such as Meera Mukherjee, Sankho Chaudhuri and Debiprasad Roy Chowdhury. He has participated in exhibitions at the Delhi Art Gallery, Jahangir Art Gallery in Mumbai, AIFACS Gallery in New Delhi, Max Muller Bhavan, Academy of Fine Arts and the Birla Academy of Art and Culture in Kolkata.

He has been honors with many awards throughout his artistic career. including the award of AIFACS New Delhi in the year 1971 Govt of India. The National Scholarship in painting thrice. Sanyal's works have also been a part of many famous auctions conducted in India. 

Sanyal passed away in the year 2006.
